City of Tulsa Animal Welfare (TAW) will reopen for adoptions on Friday, June 10.
The shelter had been closed since May 6, 2022, after cases of canine distemper virus (CDV) were detected. During the past month, TAW treated animals at the shelter and took proactive measures to prevent the spread of CDV.
All dogs that were potentially exposed to distemper have been tested and are negative.
Animal intake will also be available by appointment only starting on Monday, June 13.
TAW public hours are 2 to 6 p.m. at 3031 N. Eerie Ave.

About Canine Distemper Virus
CDV is a very serious and sometimes fatal viral illness that affects dogs and other members of the Canidae family. It also affects ferrets. The illness can strike a dog at any age, but young, unvaccinated dogs and puppies are most susceptible. The virus is found in bodily secretions and spread via inhalation. Once inhaled, the virus can move to the lymph nodes and then to the blood, spreading to the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital and central nervous systems. The City asks dog owners to ensure their dogs are up to date on the CDV vaccine, as it is recognized as one of the most effective vaccines.
